West Aussies are bracing for a weekend of wild weather as The Bureau of Meteorology issues a severe weather warning.

BOM issued the severe weather warning for damaging winds at 4.42pm on Friday afternoon and stated that isolated damaging wind gusts are set to develop over the southwest coast this evening.

“A low pressure system will approach the southwest of the state this evening, producing damaging wind gusts in showers and thunderstorms about the coast. Winds will ease around sunrise as the low moves southeast and away from the coast,” the warning said.

Damaging wind gusts of up to 100km per hour are forecast to lash parts of Western Australia’s South West on Friday evening and overnight, with the strongest winds expected in showers and thunderstorms between Bunbury and Windy Harbour.

The warning said that gusts of 90 to 100km per hour were likely across coastal towns including Busselton, Dunsborough, Margaret River and Augusta, after a 100km per hour gust was recorded at Cape Leeuwin at 3.55pm.

Conditions are expected to ease around sunrise on Saturday.

BOM stated that winds of this strength typically affect the South West around five times a year.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services advises that people in the affected area should:

  • If outside find safe shelter away from trees, power lines, storm water drains and streams.
  • Close your curtains and blinds, and stay inside away from windows.
  • Unplug electrical appliances and do not use land line telephones if there is lightning.
  • If boating, swimming or surfing leave the water.
  • Be alert and watch for hazards on the road such as fallen power lines and loose debris.
  • Keep away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways.
