Perth locals have been shivering through a relentless barrage of near-freezing mornings with the icy blast reaching a bone-chilling climax as the city recorded its coldest morning of 2026 so far — and one of the chilliest seen in three years.

The fringes of Perth recorded its lowest temperature of the year last Tuesday when the mercury plummeted to 0.3C near the Gingin Airport.

But brutal wind gusts left the Wheatbelt aviation hub feeling like a numbing -0.5C.

And the regional town of Dwellingup thermometers read 1.3C on Tuesday morning with wild winds making it feel like a frosty -2.4C.

Just 48 hours later on Thursday, it was the metro areas turn to freeze.

Jandakot registered 0.5C, officially cementing it as the coldest morning the city has endured in three years.

The icy torture continued into Friday morning, with temperatures dropping to just 3.1C across Perth, while Jandakot recorded 1C.

Out in the country, several regional centres crashed well below 0C.

By Saturday, shivering residents finally got a slight reprieve with an overnight minimum of 10.8C.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Angeline Prasad explained a massive weather system was responsible.

“Last week was particularly cold around southern and central WA, and this is simply because we had a really large high in the Indian Ocean and a low pressure system in the Great Australian Bight,” Ms Prasad said.

“That created a fairly deep cold southerly trajectory across southern WA, so we were getting a lot of cold air from the Southern Ocean being directed pretty much northwards into southern WA.

“What this meant was both our daytime and overnight temperatures were much colder than average for this time of the year.”

Despite the consistent lows, Ms Prasad said “it’s not abnormal”.

“It was much, much cooler than average but this is what weather is,” she said.

“And last week, due to the weather pattern, we did see this really cold few days that lasted for a number of days.”

However there is relief on its way.

Ms Prasad said a cold front moving through the South West is bringing cloud cover that will act like a blanket over the city.

“Normally when we see more cloud cover our overnight minimums do tend to be higher and that’s what we’ve seen in the last two days,” she said.

“Overnight temperatures are going to stay either average or just below average, so quite close to what we normally expect for this time of the year.”

But with the cloud comes little sunshine.

“Daytime temperatures, on the other hand, will be slightly cooler than average, because of the cloud cover,” she said.

“There’s not enough sunshine getting through.”

Perth mum Esther Malyniak described the past week as “extremely freezing,” admitting simply getting out of bed had become a daily triumph of the will.

Every Sunday morning, Ms Malyniak braves the elements to take her 10-year-old son, Jake, to his weekly soccer game.

“We had to get up at 6.45am this morning whilst it was still dark,” she said.

“I’ve got my thermals on and lots of layers, my ski jacket from Switzerland, my beanie, and my dog to keep me warm.

“It seems this week that there’s a real chill in the air, and once you get cold, it’s hard to get warm.”

Ms Malyniak said her family chooses to keep warm the old fashion way.

“When we’re sitting still for long periods of time, we have our favourite footy rugs out and honey lemon drinks to keep us warm on the insides,” she said, adding that heat packs and hot water bottles have become non-negotiable household items.

While most were huddling under Ugg boots and electric blankets, some daredevils decided the best way to fight the frost was to dive right into it.

To mark the winter solstice on Sunday — the shortest day of the year — more than 50 brave swimmers plunged into the icy waters at Bicton Baths.

Meanwhile, further south, more than 20 Australian Antarctic Program expeditioners took the ultimate plunge into a -2C ice hole on Macquarie Island.

The lowest minimum temperature ever recorded in June in Perth remains a legendary -0.7C, set back on June 17, 2006.
