Perth has woken to an early deluge after a cold front bore down on Western Australia overnight bringing rain, isolated thunderstorms and gusty winds.

Up to 15mm of rain is expected across the city as the front moves its way to the South West, where it will drench agricultural areas as it travels towards the bottom of the country.

Drivers were reminded by Main Roads on Thursday morning to drive with additional caution given there was lower visibility and water on the road.

“Switch headlights on, ensure a safe braking distance, be patient and courteous; allow extra travel time,” the Main Roads warning said.

Showers are expected to ease throughout the day across Perth, which will reach a top of 19 degrees.

The city has copped more than 9mm of rain since 9am on Wednesday and more is expected to pour over the city before conditions dry up in the afternoon.

Winds up to 25 km/h and increasing to 40 km/h are expected throughout the day before conditions settle in the evening.

The rain comes after the city was hit with a rare weather event on Tuesday as lightning was seen lashing Perth skies.
