Sergeant Randall Moulden: Veteran cop’s widow urges police officers to seek help for mental health battles

The widow of a WA Police officer who took his own life said her late husband “couldn’t carry the pain of the trauma of what he had experienced” as she urged other cops to seek help for their mental health battles. Sergeant Randall Moulden can now be revealed as one of two serving officers to take their own life last month. The 49-year-old father of two died on June 29, just over a week after another serving officer also took his life. Sgt Moulden, pictured receiving a commendation award with his family, was the officer in charge of the Gnowangerup Police Station in WA’s Great Southern region. He had spent about 30 years in the force. Sgt Moulden’s wife Janean said her husband was a “one of a kind” individual who was always professional, caring, empathetic, and passionate. “These traits that not only I as a wife, but his children, his friends, his colleagues are what we loved about him,” Ms Moulden posted online. “He couldn’t carry the pain of the trauma of what he had experienced over the 30 years as a serving police officer. “Regardless of what he had seen, experienced and witnessed every day that he put on his uniform he wore it with pride, dignity and grace. “Ultimately, it was these traits as a serving officer that made him suffer.” Ms Moulden said she hoped her husband’s death should not be in vain and would prompt others to seek help for their mental health issues. “To everyone I cannot stress this enough, please please please, get help. There is absolutely no shame in reaching out,” she said. “As partners we are here to support, to love and to comfort those suffering. Your burden is our burden to share. “Don’t let this tragedy be in vain, let’s learn from it and try to change it as death is never the answer.” The recent deaths of the two officers has prompted an outpouring of grief within and outside of the force in recent days. But it has also raised serious questions about whether enough is being done to support the mental wellbeing of officers on the frontline. The family of the second officer told The West last week they were experiencing unbearable pain. “If you need help or you know someone who does — speak up,” they said. “It is not weak to speak. “We have lost a much-loved son, brother, uncle, grandson and nephew and the community has lost a dedicated police officer.
