A bushfire in WA’s south has been downgraded from an emergency level as residents are urged to evacuate if the way is clear.

People travelling on South Coast Highway in an area bounded by Hartfield Road, Bandalup Road, Coujinup Road and Fence Road in parts of Jerdacuttup, Munglinup and Ravensthorpe have been told there is a possible threat to homes.

The raging blaze broke out about 3pm at the intersection of South Coast Highway and Coujinup Road in Jerdacuttup.

It was upgraded to an emergency level before it was downgraded to a watch and act advice on Wednesday evening.

“The alert level for this fire has been downgraded as fire behaviour has decreased,” an alert on Emergency WA says.

“There is a possible threat to lives and homes as a fire is approaching in the area and conditions are changing.

Firefighters are on the scene but the blaze is not contained at this stage. It is moving in a westerly direction.

A 15km portion of South Coast Highway is closed in both directions, between Hatfield and Fence roads.

“People travelling west along South Coast Highway should travel towards Ravensthorpe and people travelling east along South Coast Highway should travel towards Munglinup,” the alert says.
