After all the glitz and the glamour of Coldplay almost a fortnight ago, to the delight of dads everywhere, Perth returned to its grungy rock roots on Wednesday night with the Foo Fighters.

The band returned to Perth for the first time since the shock death of drummer Taylor Hawkins last year.

Their Perth gig at HBF Park was the first leg of their Australian tour and their first live local show since the release of the album But Here We Are.

Find our detailed recap of the entire concert below.

That’s a wrap!

What an epic and unforgettable gig! Thank you for following our live blog this evening.

The Foo Fighters truly kicked off the first leg of their tour with a bang.

Taylor Hawkins favourite song

We play this every night because it’s Taylor Hawkins favourite song.

Grohl’s telling a story about a time at the now-defunct Big Day Out.

He and Hawkins hired scooters on the Gold Coast and ran into a sobriety checkpoint.

Grohl got pulled over and failed the breath test. Hawkins scooted by but came back.

“I’m going to jail,” Grohl told Hawkins.

Hawkins scooted back to their hotel to tell their manager: “ Dave’s going to jail.”

“So thank Taylor for getting me out of jail,” Grohl finished before launching into the song Aurora.

Grohl just referenced how Perth gets screwed

“It’s not our first time in Perth,” he said.

“But it is the first leg of our Australian tour.

“I know most people start over there and come here but f*ck that, they should all start here.”

He then called Perth his guinea pigs before playing new song Statues.

One of these days

The energy’s come down a notch with a ballad like first verse of One of these days.

Nah got ya, by the chorus we’re back to hard rock and there’s not a closed mouth at HBF.

I reckon every single person is belting out, “easy for you to say, your heart has never been broken”.

“One of these days, your heart will stop and play it’s final beat,” Grohl sings accompanied by his guitar only lit up with a single spotlight.

It’s just so hard not to think of Hawkins. I’m not crying, you’re crying.

Confession time

Look I always liked the Foo Fighters and who can’t help but like Grohl. He’s a living legend.

But it wasn’t until I saw them at their last Perth concert that I started to call myself a FAN.

Take the song Learn to fly that they just performed.

It’s actually better live. There’s not many bands that can take a popular tune and not only play it just as well live but add to it with their energy and enthusiasm.

And it’s not just charismatic frontman Grohl carrying the team, every single person on that stage gives 110 per cent.

And I don’t like to keep harking back to Hawkins’ death but there was a fear that his death would affect some of that magic. Fortunately that didn’t happen.

The Foo Fighters are delightful. Here comes one of these days...

It's solo time

Bassist Nate Mendell is “obsessed” with the Beastie Boys and their tune Sabotage was his solo track.

Grohl just said Chris Shifflet is too talented to be here. Fair.

Whip it was Freese’s solo track in reference to his time playing with Devo.

Now it’s time for the tune My Hero.
