The first competitive lawn bowls game in Kununurra in three years is just a week away, after the town’s only bowling green was brought back to life this month.

Perth contractor, Synthetic Bowling Solutions, finished laying a new $157,000 synthetic turf at Kununurra Sporties Lawn Bowls Club last week, almost three years after old, damaged turf was removed from the grounds and a local bowling competition ceased.

The new synthetic green was made possible by a $120,000 election commitment from Kimberley MLA Divina D’Anna promised in January, and a $20,000 boost from the Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley.

KSLB treasurer Yvonne Van Der Wees said the town’s 100-plus regular bowlers, aged between 15 and 75, were “ready to roll” on the new green.

“It’s such a great social, interactive sport for people of all ages and perfect for people that aren’t physically able or willing to play fast sports, including those with disabilities,” she said.

“We’re just excited to have some fun and get back out there - it has been hugely missed.”

Ms Van Der Wees said tireless efforts from volunteers, who had spent weeks preparing the club for the upgrade, had made the resurrection of the competition possible.

Ms D’Anna said she was looking forward to celebrating with the community at tonight’s official turf opening.

“I have been excited by the passion and collaboration of locals to make this a reality to get ready for their next season,” she said.

“I look forward to seeing how the new bowling green can bring the community together.”

The Kununurra lawn bowls season will begin next week .
