Sydney teen charged over alleged death threat to Israel president banned from contacting Donald Trump

A teenager charged over an alleged death threat towards Israeli President Isaac Herzog has also been banned from contacting Donald Trump. Darcy Tinning, 19, appeared before the Bail Division Local Court on Thursday from custody at Surry Hills police station after he was arrested by Australian Federal Police. Mr Tinning faces a single charge of using a carriage service to make a threat to kill. Magistrate Daniel Covington, in granting bail, said Mr Tinning would be banned from leaving home unless in the company of a relative “particularly in relation to the upcoming days” while Mr Herzog is in Australia. Under the conditions of his release, Mr Tinning will also be barred from contacting or approaching Mr Herzog “by any means”. The matter was due to wrap up before a representative of the NSW Director of Public Prosecution urged Mr Covington to add an additional condition: that Mr Tinning also be barred from approaching or contacting the US President “given the threat to the American president”. Mr Tinning will also be banned from using X, formerly Twitter, as well as any encrypted devices or apps, or from entering any international points of departure. Mr Covington said Mr Tinning had given police access to his phone and made “admissions against his interest”. The court was told “no adverse material” was seized from a Newtown address where he was arrested. He will reappear before court on April 7. Mr Herzog will depart Israel on Sunday for a five-day visit to Australia, during which he will meet with Anthony Albanese, Jewish leaders, and victims and their families of the Bondi Beach terror attack. Mr Albanese invited Mr Herzog to visit in the days after the December 14 attack. Australian Federal Police on Thursday said officers made an arrest over an alleged online threat toward a foreign head of state and Internationally Protected Person. The AFP’s National Security Investigations team last month launched a probe into a report of a threat made on a social media platform. Investigators allegedly linked Mr Tinning to the threat, and on Wednesday raided a home in Newtown where they seized a mobile phone and drug paraphernalia. If found guilty and convicted, the man faces a maximum penalty of 10 years’ imprisonment. Under Commonwealth law, foreign heads of state or official are afforded “special protection” from any attack, including on their “freedom or dignity”. The protections extend to members of the official’s family. While widely welcomed by the Australian Jewish community, Mr Herzog’s visit has sparked outrage among the pro-Palestine movement, human rights organisations, and some Labor MPs who plan to join rallies against the visit on Monday. They contend Mr Herzog should be arrested over an International Criminal Court probe into allegations Israel has committed genocide in Gaza, and a separate UN court allegation Mr Herzog “incited the commission of genocide”. Both Israel and Mr Herzog deny the allegations, with the President’s role largely ceremonial.
