Sydney suburbs with the most guns revealed as NSW government moves to close legal loophole after Bondi shooting

Police statistics have revealed the Sydney suburbs housing the most gun owners as the NSW government makes moves to close a legal loophole on gun ownership in the wake of the Bondi Beach shooting.
With a whopping 9956 legally-owned guns in the hands of 2621 owners in Camden alone, each license holder sports an average of 3.7 guns.
NSW is considered the “gun state” of Australia, with more than 1.1 million registered firearms – far beyond the total of any other state in the country.
Sajid Akram, one of the alleged gunman who died during Sunday’s Bondi massacre, legally had six guns registered to his name and made up just one of the staggering 254,992 registered gun owners in NSW as of July 2025.
To make matter worse, the terrorist’s gun tally pales in comparison to some other individual firearm owners in Sydney.

One person in the western suburb of Punchbowl owned 226 firearms according to records in July 2025, while another in the eastern Chifley-La Perouse region in Sydney has 295.
After Camden, the suburbs with the highest number of gun owners in Sydney include Windsor in Sydney’s northwest (2232), Liverpool in the southwest (2010), Wentworthville (1248) and Maroubra (1123)
In response to the crisis, NSW Premier Chris Minns has urgently recalled parliament next week to ensure guns reforms can be passed before Christmas.

The Premier said NSW Police routinely revoke licences from gun holders that they suspect or fear are a threat to the community but said there was a loophole where appeals are often successful.
“We’ll extinguish that appeal pathway,” the Premier said.
In regional areas of the state, gun ownership numbers skyrocket.
Bathurst in NSW’s Central Tablelands has the most gun owners in the state, with over 3683, followed by Goulburn, with 3338 firearms holders.
The staggering number of firearms in the hands of Australians also saw Prime Minister Anthony Albanese raise the issue with national cabinet.

The Prime Minister said there was a need for “tougher gun laws, including limits on the number of guns that can be used or licensed by individuals”.
Premier Minns will reconvene NSW parliament next week on December 22-23 to discuss tighter gun laws.
