State surfing champions were crowned on the weekend at Margaret River

Eleven State champions were crowned at the weekend’s WA Surf Masters Championships in Margaret River. Gas Bay brought great conditions for the competition with surfers showing off their skills from pro junior, open, over-30 to over-60. Cowaramup’s Macklin Flynn was the stand-out performer in the open men, winning the final by 2.27 to Margaret River’s Okie Fraser who won the pro junior division. Fraser posted a perfect 10.00 point ride in the semi-final, carrying that momentum into the final with a near perfect two-wave total of 19.33, before going on to secure victory with a combined total of 17.00 (from a possible 20), finishing ahead open men’s winner Flynn. “Gas is always such a fun wave, even with wind up the face there was tubes and air sections everywhere. It was so cool to get so many good waves in a comp and get to show a bit of my best surfing,” Fraser said. “So good to get to have an event out at Gas and I wish there were more of them.” Margaret River’s Olive Hardy claimed victory in the open women’s final, posting a combined total of 12.00 with the reigning under-18 girls state champion showcasing her developing talent. The Pro Junior Women’s division was one to watch with Ruby Berry claiming the 2026 State Title in her home town with a high-quality final against a strong field including Olive and Willow Hardy. Both Flynn and Olive Hardy earned a spot in the WA Trials, where they will compete for a wildcard entry into the World Surf League Margaret River Pro this April. Belinda Adams (Busselton) led the way in the women’s, claiming titles in both the over 30 and over 40 divisions, while Samantha Vanderford (Green Head) took top honours in the over 50 women’s. The men’s divisions saw Ash Farrow (Dunsborough) and Jesse Molloy (Witchcliffe) secure wins in the over 30 and over 40 respectively. Tony Farris (Cowaramup) claimed the over 50 title ahead of defending champion Warren Boyes (Dunsborough), while Paul Dupuy (Albany) took home the over 55 and Brad Cowan (Esperance) claimed victory in the over 65. Surfing WA Contest Director Pete Carrol said the event showcased both the quality of the conditions and the depth of talent across the state. “The level of surfing across the weekend was outstanding, and Gas Bay really delivered,” Carrol said. “From clean, hollow waves on day one to bigger, more powerful surf on day two, it gave surfers every opportunity to perform. The depth of talent across all divisions, from our experienced masters to the next generation coming through, was impressive to see.” Event champions will be invited to represent WA at the Australian Shortboard Titles, set to be held in Wollongong, NSW in August.
