The Diwali Festival of Lights is set to be bigger, brighter and more festive than ever before after the South West Indian Group received Lotterywest funding for the event.

The event, to be held in November at the South West Italian Club, has received $10,000 from Lotterywest.

Group president Dr Partha Ramesh said the funding would go a long way towards delivering the event in an otherwise limited year for the group.

“The Lotterywest funding will help us significantly,” he said.

“It has made an immense different to our event because we are a not-for-profit group so every penny counts ... we really think support from Lotterywest and government organisations are what help makes the event unique and helps keep the cost of tickets for the public really cheap.

“Diwali is a global festival of celebration of happiness, harmony and peace.

“It is the celebration of the victory of happiness over sadness and of light over darkness.” Bunbury MLA Don Punch said he was glad the event could be supported.

I am a huge fan of the Diwali Festival of Lights for the celebration of diversity and inclusion it brings to our community,

he said.

“It is a raucous, welcoming, high-energy, fun event so I am very pleased to see it attract the support of Lotterywest.”

The event has been limited to a crowd of 400 people, with 200 tickets already sold.
