Teamwork, learning new skills and personal development in focus for Cookernup’s youth cadet program

Teamwork, learning new skills and personal development is the focus behind a new program in Cookernup for young individuals. On February 9, the Cookernup Bush Fire Brigade launched its fire cadets program, giving 11-16-year-olds the opportunity to learn more about firefighting and emergency services, while also strengthening confidence, building skills and forming friendships in a supportive environment. Cookernup Bush Fire Brigade training officer and cadet instructor Dean Mullins has been involved with bushfire services since 1996 and a member of the Cookernup brigade for seven years. With the brigade deciding to introduce the initiative after noticing a gap in youth programs helping to develop new and future volunteer firefighters, Mr Mullins said the program helped young people in various aspects. “The fire cadets program is about giving young people positive experiences, role models and skills they can carry into their future, whether that leads to emergency services volunteering or simply greater confidence in everyday life,” he said. Mr Mullins said benefits of the program included introduction to basic firefighting concepts, including hose handling and pump awareness, radio use, map reading and first aid awareness, teamwork, leadership and communication skills. Participation in community events, team-building activities and a strong sense of belonging and community involvement were also other benefits. Mr Mullins said having cadets join the brigade brought fresh energy, enthusiasm and a strong pathway for developing the next generation of firefighters. “They will gain valuable skills, confidence, teamwork and an understanding of community service, while also strengthening the future capability of our brigade,” he said.
