Rabbitohs veteran Mark Nicholls has signed a contract extension that will keep him at Redfern until at least the end of the 2023 season.

Nicholls, 31, has become a fan favourite since arriving at South Sydney in 2018.

Outgoing coach Wayne Bennett transformed the prop forward from a fringe first grader during stints at Canberra and Melbourne to a metre-eating mainstay of the Rabbitohs forward pack.

He played every game of the Rabbitohs’ 2021 campaign, including their 14-12 grand final loss to the Panthers earlier this month.

When Bennett elected to rest a handful of players ahead of the finals series, Nicholls, playfully nicknamed “The GOAT”, was named captain of the Rabbitohs for the first time.

Nicholls said he was thrilled to have recommitted to the Rabbitohs.

“The last few years have been amazing for me and my family, both in terms of my footy and away from the field,” Nicholls said.

“I love this club and everything it does for me and my family. It’s an honour to wear the red and green.

“I love the group of players and coaches we have, the members are second-to-none, and hopefully I can repay them all by helping us go one step further than we did this year by winning the premiership.”

Rabbitohs head of football Mark Ellison said the club was equally pleased to have retained Nicholls’ services for another two years.

“We’re really excited to have Mark staying with the club for at least two more seasons,” he said.

“He’s a senior player with leadership skills amongst our group and is a fantastic example of perseverance and determination to succeed.

“We couldn’t be happier to have Mark staying with our club and we see his best football still being in front of him.”

Nicholls was one of two Rabbitohs who played in the grand final without having a secured contract for next season.

The other, Benji Marshall, announced his retirement from the game in the days that followed the defeat.
