It’s been a big week for Rockingham-Mandurah Mariners youngster Corey Wasley, who made his debut for WA in both the Sheffield Shield and One-Day Cup.
The rookie-contracted 21-year-old was initially named in the squad to take on NSW in the Sheffield Shield last week but was left out of the starting XI.
However, a shoulder injury to WA captain Aaron Hardie in the first innings resulted in Wasley being subbed in to make his First-Class debut.
With WA batting to save the game, Wasley made a valuable 29 from 54 balls as his side ultimately made it to stumps in dramatic fashion, with just one wicket remaining. The draw sent WA to the top of the Shield table.
Just two days later, Wasley made his List-A debut in the 50-over clash with NSW.
Chasing an imposing 371 from NSW, led by a blazing 149 from former Australia opener Sam Konstas, WA were never really in the hunt as they were bowled out for 293. Wasley made just nine, but his Mariners teammate Sam Whiteman scored an impressive 116.
Wasley’s debut has come in the early stages of his third season on the State’s rookie list.
A junior run machine for Rockingham-Mandurah, the left-hander smashed 206 in a State Second XI game as an 18-year-old three years ago and averaged 68.75 with the bat in the competition last season.
The Mariners took to Facebook to congratulate Wasley.
“These opportunities don’t come without years of hard work, dedication, sacrifice and an enormous amount of commitment to becoming the best cricketer he can be,” the club said in its post.
“Corey’s journey is a fantastic example of what can be achieved through persistence, determination and a willingness to keep putting in the work. Congratulations, Corey! You’ve certainly earned these moments, and the entire Mariners family couldn’t be prouder!”
