A shark sighting has closed one of Perth’s most popular beaches, a month after a swimmer was fatally mauled to death at nearby Port beach.

Morning beachgoers were told to exit the water at Cottesloe after a report a shark was lurking just 200 metres offshore, between Eric and Grant streets.

The beach was closed just after 9am and the species of shark is unknown.

One witness told The West Australian swimmers, which included young children, were quick to exit the water once the warning siren began blasting.

It comes after Port Beach regular and father-of-two Paul Millachip lost his life during a horrifying shark attack last month.

The 57-year-old was killed just north of popular surf spot Sandtrax, in North Fremantle, on the morning of November 6.

Four friends armed only with a dinghy put their own fears aside to try and rescue Mr Millachip and warn other swimmers of the danger.
