Perth weather: Hail, rain and wild weather wreak havoc in WA

Perth was hit with wild weather on Tuesday morning, blanketing suburbs in hail and causing traffic chaos.

The severe weather system, which swept across the southern half of WA, caused hail stones ‘as large as Maltesers’ to fall near some homes.

Heavy rain has also bucketed down, with Perth almost doubling its November average rainfall in just one hour.

So far, 40.4mm of rain was recorded in Perth, while 16.8mm was been recorded in Swanbourne.

Lightning also lit up the sky, with more than 100,000 strikes recorded overnight in WA’s South West alone.

And, with the wild weather came the chaos on the roads.

The left lane at the Erindale Road entry ramp to Mitchell Freeway southbound was blocked after a car rollover.

Main Roads said traffic was heavy on approach and urged drivers to take care.

Tonkin Highway in Bayswater was flooded, impacting the left lane south bound in Guildford.

While the left lane of Orrong Road northbound at Roberts Road in Lathlain was also blocked due to flooding.

The Bureau of Meteorology says a stagnant trough through the eastern part of the State, combined with an unusually moist air mass over the region, produced the severe thunderstorms.

Severe weather warnings for the Lower West district and the western Goldfields have now been cancelled.

The rain and stormy weather is expected to clear up this afternoon, with a fine and sunny day predicted for tomorrow.
