SilverSport helps keep seniors fit and active
Age should be no barrier to sporting participation and soon neither will the cost of memberships with the launch of a new Department of Sport and Recreation initiative.
The SilverSport program aims to increase the number of physically active seniors by allowing them to apply for financial assistance to help cover sporting club memberships or physical activity program fees.
The trial will be available from April 1 for Albany residents aged 60 and older until December 30.
Eligible seniors who have a current Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card can apply for up to $200.
Albany Mayor Dennis Wellington said with about 70 per cent of Albany residents overweight or obese, it was vital to promote a healthy lifestyle.
After successful results in a similar junior program, Mr Wellington hopes SilverSport will motivate Albany residents to look after their health and wellbeing.

City of Albany manager recreation services Sam Stevens said she hoped the program would encourage more seniors to get involved in sport or physical activity.
“As well as the physical benefits, being involved in a club or association brings a social benefit too and helps our seniors stay involved in and enjoying their community,” she said.
“Albany is blessed with many sporting clubs and activity programs that welcome senior participation, with a range of options also available through Albany Leisure and Aquatic Centre.”
