Siblings’ trek to raise awareness of cystic fibrosis

Albany’s Shari Douglas will tackle a trek in Nepal, raising money for cystic fibrosis research, a cause close to her heart.

Alongside brother Mathew O’Brien, she will battle the rough terrain on the six-day trek next month, raising funds for Cystic Fibrosis WA.

Their close family friend Warrick Ferris lives with the condition.

“Growing up we have learnt and witnessed the difficulties he has had to go through so this is very important to us,” Ms Douglas said.

The duo also did a trek in Kokoda in 2016 for the same cause.

“We want to make a difference, we are inspired by the work of Cystic Fibrosis Western Australia and wanted to support them by raising money,” Ms Douglas said.

“The more people that know about cystic fibrosis, the greater their impact.” She said the trek would be a challenge but she was looking forward to tackling it.

“It will be a hard six days, very steep and very hilly, and it’s going to be a challenge but we are doing it for a great cause,” she said.

“Our friend Warrick has his good days and bad days, like every person living with the disease, and that’s why it’s so important that these funds are raised for research and medicines and, who knows, maybe even one day a cure.”

She said the community had been fantastic in showing its support, helping raise $4000 towards the siblings’ $10,000 goal.
