WA Individualised Services will host a free information session in Kalgoorlie-Boulder to empower National Disability Insurance Scheme funding beneficiaries and their families.

WA Individualised Services co-chief executive Su-Hsien Lee said the organisation had received a grant to provide support and information for people with disabilities and their families.

Ms Lee said the NDIS Quality and Safeguard Commission regulated the disability sector and oversaw the quality of the supports.

She said the training would allow NDIS beneficiaries to understand what they could expect from the service providers and what they were entitled to from providers when they were using the NDIS funding.

“So our role is really to promote and share with people and families what they are entitled to, under the quality and safeguarding framework . . . and therefore, how they can make a complaint if they’re not happy with their NDIS services,” Ms Lee said.

Ms Lee told the Kalgoorlie Miner many families were self-managing their NDIS plans and using non-registered employers.

“When they are directly employing their own workers, there are just some additional things they need to think about that are actually about their responsibilities, not just what their rights and entitlements are. So we’re sharing with them all this information,” she said.

While the organisation is hoping to provide a workshop in every region of WA, Ms Lee said they were currently focusing on the May 31 workshop in Kalgoorlie-Boulder.

However, she said monthly online sessions were also available outside these regional visits, with different topics covered during each session.

The workshop will be at Kalgoorlie-Boulder Lotteries House on Wilson Street, with a morning session from 10am-12pm and an afternoon session from 1pm-5pm.

Ms Lee explained the morning session would have a more structured and formal approach, while the afternoon one would invite people to ask questions while having a cup of tea or coffee.
