The State Government has announced further funding for Western Ringtail Possum projects in Albany.

Two environmental groups from Albany have received almost $64,000 of funding to conduct more research on the critically-endangered possum that can only be found in the south- west of Western Australia.

Oyster Harbour Catchment Group received a total of $39,770 that will be used to fund their project Western Ringtail Possums: Gaining Greater Understanding.

Torbay Catchment Group was also granted $23,870 to conduct further research in the West Albany region.

Torbay Catchment Group project officer Pip Tilbrook said the funding was essential for reasearch into, and to help maintain the possum’s habitat, which has been in decline in recent years.

The group is now surveying the surrounding area of Torbay Hill up to the coast on Elleker to record the number of possums in the area.

Ms Tilbrook said that there was substantial evidence the possums lived in the area, and the group hoped to educate all locals about their existence.
