Esperance community bands together to quickly remove whale carcase that posed shark risk at beach

Members of the Esperance community quickly banded together on Sunday to remove a whale carcase from a local beach that had the potential to attract great white sharks. The carcase landed on First Beach, just east of West Beach, on Saturday, prompting an impassioned response from locals. The Esperance Ocean Safety and Support group on Sunday afternoon announced the “safe and successful” removal of the carcase that “posed a significant safety threat to our community”. “Thanks to the swift efforts of local experts and the support of the wider Esperance community, we have restored safety to our beloved First Beach,” the group said in a media statement posted to their Facebook page. “Proving difficult to manage and execute, this effort would not have been possible without the dedication and expertise of many community members.” The group specifically highlighted the efforts of boat operator David Gray and crew, rigger Cooper Gillen, and support rigger Michael Capelli, and acknowledged the support of the Shire of Esperance, Esperance Volunteer Marine Rescue, Department of Transport, Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, Liam Creedon and Rob Holten, as well as the wider Esperance community. “While First Beach is now a safe space for recreation in the long term, it is essential to remain aware of the potential presence of great white sharks in the area short term,” the group said in its statement. “This incident serves as a reminder to stay vigilant and take appropriate precautions when enjoying the water. “We acknowledge and appreciate the trust and collaboration shown by DPIRD in giving authority and allowing us to engage local experts and build capacity at the community level. “Esperance is so fortunate to have a community with a wealth of skills in ocean activities and shark mitigation protocols, ensuring that we can respond quickly and effectively in such situations. “We are proud to put our name to what we’ve been able to achieve in what proved to be a handballing exercise between authorities shifting ownership of the problem that was brought to their attention.” The group said moving forward it was committed to working closely with DPIRD and other authorities to develop clear procedures for future incidents. “Early intervention will help minimise the time, effort, and challenges involved in managing situations like these. Together, we can ensure a safer and more prepared Esperance,” it said. Beaches remained closed on Sunday in the First and West Beach areas following the carcase removal, with the Shire of Esperance to review the situation on Monday.
