A young woman is “fighting for life” after being a victim of a drive-by shooting in Queensland overnight.
QLD Police said they were contacted around 8.15pm on Saturday with reports of shots being fired from a vehicle outside a licensed premises, The Fitzy Hotel, on Bryants Road, Loganholme.
The venue was hosting a boxing event.
A crowd had gathered in the passenger drop-off zone of the venue during an intermission, Detective Inspector Ian Galpin told reporters on Sunday afternoon.
“At 8:15pm a Mitsubishi motor vehicle approached the drop-off zone, stopping in close proximity to those outside,” he said.
“A number of shots were then fired from the front passenger window of that vehicle, striking four persons.”
In CCTV footage, he said two men could be seen inside the vehicle, which fled the scene, wearing balaclavas and gloves.
Four people were injured and taken to hospital and all have since undergone surgery.
Two men, aged 37 and 38, both suffered gunshot wounds to their abdomens and are both in a serious but stable condition after surgery.
A 27-year-old man also suffered a gunshot wound to his abdomen and is in a stable condition post-surgery.
The fourth victim, a 19-year-old woman, is in a critical and unstable condition post-surgery after suffering gunshot wounds to her neck and head.
Mr Galpin said police believed the woman was “an innocent bystander”.
“I don’t believe the young lady was an intended victim of this, I believe she was an innocent bystander,” he said.
“It appals me, it’s horrific.
“It’s something that she and her family should never have to go through.”
A burnt out vehicle, believed to be involved in the incident, was found nearby.
“At 8:35pm, a Mitsubishi motor vehicle was set alight on Maloney Road at Waterford West,” Mr Galpin said.
“Subsequent CCTV inquiries identified a second vehicle which collected the occupants of the Mistubishi after they had set the vehicle alight.
“It is possible one of these persons from the Mitsubishi was injured or burnt during this process.”
The second vehicle was set alight soon after.
Mr Galpin said the force did not have persons of interest “at this stage” but vowed to find those involved.
“I really do appeal to the community,” he said.
“As I said, we have a young lady who is currently fighting for life and I appeal to anyone that has any information whatsoever to please contact police and assist us with this investigation.”
A police spokesperson said there was no ongoing threat to the public.
Logan Mayor Jon Raven said the community was shaken by the terrifying incident.
“People are scared,” he told Weekend Today.
“This has sent a shockwave through Logan because we’ve never seen anything like this happen in our city before.”
