Construction of the State Government’s $92.8 million Tom Price Hospital has reached a significant milestone, with the first major concrete pour for the facility’s foundation slab.
The project, backed by a $20 million commitment from Rio Tinto, will provide a modern, purpose-built hospital to support the healthcare needs of the Tom Price community.
The new facility will include a contemporary emergency department, primary care services, private consultation rooms and a four-bed inpatient ward as well as dental and pathology services.
Early works for the project were completed this year, including critical flood mitigation and site preparation.
A second stage of works is now under way focusing on construction of the building slab, installation of in-ground services and structural components.
New access points and roads have been established to support construction and future hospital operations, while essential services, including water, sewer, stormwater and power have been connected to the existing town infrastructure.
The site has been carefully prepared for construction, with inground services installed, protective barriers put in place and reinforcement laid to ensure structural integrity.
The concrete pour required about 80 cubic metres of concrete.
A further 12 pours are scheduled between now and October to complete the hospital’s structural base and frame.
Pilbara MLA Kevin Michel said the new Tom Price Hospital was an important upgrade for the community.
“It’s great to see the new Tom Price Hospital taking shape and becoming one step closer to completion,” Mr Michel said.
“While the Tom Price Hospital has dutifully provided healthcare to residents for decades, we are looking forward to the completion of a newer, more modern facility.”
The project is also delivering strong benefits for the local economy, with materials such as sand and crushed stone sourced from nearby quarries and concrete supplied by a local plant, supporting regional businesses and jobs.
Importantly, core hospital services will remain operational throughout construction to ensure continued access to care for the community.
Health Infrastructure Minister John Carey said the slab pour at the new hospital was another example of regional health projects progressing across Western Australia.
“This slab pour joins a range of regional health milestones that we have reached in the past month, such as the practical completion of the Geraldton Health Campus redevelopment and the enclosure of the new Mullewa Community Hospital,” Mr Carey said.
“The Cook Labor Government is getting on with the job of delivering critical health infrastructure for the Tom Price community, while ensuring services remain available to the community throughout construction.”
The investments form part of the Government’s $5.5 billion health infrastructure program, focused on ensuring more West Australians can access the care they need, when they need it.
Health Minister Meredith Hammat said the new hospital would provide high-quality care for the community.
“This milestone is about ensuring the Tom Price community continues to receive reliable, high-quality care now and into the future.
“The new hospital will strengthen the delivery of essential health services locally, while maintaining uninterrupted care throughout construction.”
The new hospital is on track for completion in late 2027.
