Women are being reminded early detection of breast cancer can save lives as Hedland prepares to paint the town pink for Pink Ribbon Day this week.

As part of the Pink Ribbon Day proceedings, the 16th annual Pilbara Pink Breakfast will encourage everyone in town to put on their best flamingo-style outfit and flock to various events around town.

The breakfast, open to both men and women, is presented by Hedland Well Women’s Centre and BHP Billiton, and aims to raise vital funds in support of women affected by breast cancer.

The usual format of one massive Pink Breakfast wasn’t an option this year because of COVID-19, but the HWWC wouldn’t let that put a stop to the proceedings.

This year, several locations will host Pink Breakfasts, from the Hedland Well Women’s Centre to the Pilbara Port Authority tower and many in-between.

Hedland Well Women’s Centre program co-ordinator Justine Esmonde said she was excited to see the community simultaneously adapt to the COVID-19 world and deliver the best ever Pink Breakfast events.

“For over a decade, the Hedland Well Women's Centre hosted the Pink Ribbon Breakfast, raising over $300,000 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation,” she said.

“2020 has seen us all face challenges we never expected. These challenges have opened up the opportunity to again move in a new and exciting direction — an opportunity for even more community input and involvement in this worthy cause.

“We invited industry, businesses, friends and community groups to host their own Pink Pilbara Breakfast.”

A list of public events being held can be found via the Hedland Well Women’s Centre Facebook page.
