Councillors agree to update Port Hedland tip

Councillors have agreed to the close the “end of life” South Hedland Landfill Facility to make way for the creation of a new long-term site following changes to financial policy.

Under a new landfill establishment reserve, the Town of Port Hedland aims to close the existing facility in favour of a new facility at the existing location along North Circular Road.

The current facility, which has a lifespan of approximately 11 years, was expected to close down to make was for a new site which will involve designing, developing and constructing a transfer station on the current site and a new facility on another suitable site.

As part of financial planning processes the Town of Port Hedland identified there was no funding in place to aid this process.

ToPH Mayor Peter Carter said the project would ease projected population growth and bolster economic diversification.

“Council and I are committed to long term financial planning, which provides for the community’s future needs, taking into consideration the critical growth factors of today,” he said.

“With projected population increases, economic diversification driving commercial waste needs and an existing facility approaching its end of life, the time is now right to plan for a future landfill site which serves our community and builds on the Town’s recent sustainability improvements.”

At a June meeting Councillors acknowledged the process would take time and require numerous environmental and statutory considerations.
