A woman assaulted near South Hedland’s shopping centre is in a serious but stable condition and will be airlifted to Perth for treatment.

Police say the woman in her 20s was assaulted on Wednesday evening in parkland between Mitchie Crescent and Forrest Circle in South Hedland.

It is alleged a 35-year-old man from Camballin near Fitzroy Crossing attacked the woman, causing serious injuries.

The man has been charged with aggravated grievous bodily harm and was due to appear in South Hedland Magistrates Court on Thursday.

South Hedland detectives are appealing for anyone in the community who may have witnessed the incident, or anyone with CCTV or dash-cam footage to contact South Hedland Police Station or Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.
