Proud parents pinching themselves as Pingelly product Tim English prepares to play in historic AFL grand final

Pingelly-raised Tim English will play in his first-ever football grand final on a historic day for his home State of WA. English will run out for the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in front of more than 60,000 people on Saturday — the first time WA has hosted the AFL’s marquee event. Raised on his parents’ grain and sheep farm in Pingelly, where he went to primary school and played sport as a child, English will be chasing his first AFL premiership medal. He was picked up by the Bulldogs in the 2016 national draft, only months after their famous grand final victory against Sydney. Now, he will try to help the club win its third VFL/AFL premiership in 144 years as they clash with Melbourne for the 2021 premiership cup. Tim’s parents Jon and Julie English, who sold their farm in Pingelly in 2017 and relocated to Perth, have been able to catch up with the 24-year-old ruckman this week after his club was released from quarantine. They flew to Adelaide last week to watch their preliminary final win over Port Adelaide and are now soaking up a busy week ahead of the biggest day on the nation’s sporting calendar. Jon said he was still pinching himself as his son prepared to play in an AFL grand final. “It’s amazing, it really is. With it being in Perth and in the year the Bulldogs have got through, words can’t describe it. It will be an incredible moment if they win,” he said. Tim attended Christ Church Grammar School and spent time with South Fremantle in the WAFL before he was drafted to the Bulldogs. He has played 68 senior games since his debut in 2017. “He’s so happy,” Jon said. “Tim is a bit of a perfectionist and meticulous with his preparation. “He is very, very focused, very hard on himself and sets himself goals. “We put this all down to Tim’s hard work, people don’t see what goes on behind the scenes all the extra work he puts in. “This will be the first footy grand final for Tim, he’s only played in a cricket one before when he played for Pingelly in a grand final as a 15-year-old.” Julie has taken the chance to do some home cooking for her son in the lead up to the big game, including a favourite of his, rocky road. There will be a strong contingent of about 20 family and friends, including his brother Daniel, supporting Tim at Optus Stadium on Saturday, while no doubt members of his junior club the Brookton-Pingelly Panthers will be watching on from the Wheatbelt. “Tim loved playing junior footy for Brookton-Pingelly,” Jon said. “We had both our kids in the same team and it was a little country town but as parents we loved it and we still have connections there, so I’d imagine they’d be cheering him on in the grand final.” Brookton-Pingelly Football Club president Tony Kirk said the club was extremely proud of Tim’s achievements. “We certainly will be supporting him,” Kirk said. “A couple of months ago Tim approached us for one of our Brookton-Pingelly jumpers to wear at training when they used their junior club jumpers one night. “We will all be up at the new recreation centre in Pingelly, watching it from there with a few beers.”
