Lower Great Southern claim hat-trick of Southern Zone Women’s Inter League Round Robin Fours titles

Lower Great Southern oozed class and poise to claim their third successive Southern Zone Women’s Inter League Round Robin Fours title at Brookton Bowling Club. The tournament held on February 17 drew 96 of the top female bowlers from the State’s south for the spirited three-day competition to determine superiority across the greens. Heading into the final round Lower Great Southern and Great Southern were locked at three wins apiece before a capitulation from Great Southern handed their rivals the victory. Up until the final round Upper Great Southern had not won an aggregate but secured a huge upset win over Great Southern 102-58, while Lower Great Southern smashed Central Stirling 99-57 to clinch the shield. Lower Great Southern finished with eight points and a whopping 131.3 per cent from 11 rink wins, while South East Coastal (12.5 rink wins) and Great Southern (10) were tied on six points to round out the top three. Central Stirling were fourth with four points from 11 rink wins, 1.5 ahead of South Coastal Arunga also four points while Upper Great Southern finished last with two points. Twenty players who excelled at the competition were selected to represent the Southern bowling zone at the Inter Zone Round Robin tournament on March 9 and 10 in Kulin. Great Southern boasted the most selections with seven women chosen to play in Kulin, while four players from champions Lower Great Southern were also picked. Helen Parks (SEC), Mary Wellstead (CS), Ronnie Lee (CS), Beryl Cooper (LGS) and Sharon Whana (GS) will each skipper teams at the event. Cooper, Whana and Wellstead were also selected as the three skippers for their tournament against Metro which will be played on Sunday, March 17, to prepare for country week. A venue is yet to be announced.
