Work will start this month on the design and construction of 16 new floating boat pens at the Carnarvon Boat Harbour as part of a State Government pledge to improve Fascine waterway access.

A $2.1 million contract was awarded to SMC Marine to deliver a concrete floating pen set to accommodate 16 vessels up to 15m long.

Engineering and environmental studies have also started to determine the best approach to open the Fascine, while regular hydrographic surveys will provide data about changes to the entrance channel, and strategically positioned instrumentation is collecting wave, current and water level information.

Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said the State Government recognised access to the Carnarvon Fascine had been an ongoing issue.

"Last year, we allocated $7 million as part of the WA Recovery Plan to look at both short-term and long-term solutions to enable year-round access to the Fascine,” she said.

"We are continuing to collect data and work towards a long-term solution to ensure better and continued access to the Fascine.”

Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan said expanding the Carnarvon Boat Harbour will ensure local skippers can continue to get out on to the water while the works progress.

Construction is expected to take about seven months to complete.
