Geraldton mayor Shane Van Styn won the Mid West super heavyweight title as, for one night, Activewest Stadium turned into a colosseum for the region’s first-ever cage match at Fists of Fury III.

A showcase of a range of fighting disciplines from boxing to MMA, the King of the Cage was a sell-out hit.

For many, the main event was Shane ‘Stone Cold’ Van Styn’s battle with Scotty ‘GBH’ Grieves, from Perth gym Kick Ass MMA.

Van Styn was keen to atone for back-to-back losses against larger opponents and put on a strong showing, earning a unanimous points victory to secure the Mid West super heavyweight title after a tough battle.

Van Styn was pleased to take the victory.

“We had a game plan and we stuck to it, it’s great to get a victory in front of the home crowd and I feel a did the job well,’ he said.

“Nearly got a stoppage in the second round but just ran out of time but I really tried to work my jab and straight left to stop him coming forward and use my range.”

In all, 15 bouts took place and eight local fighters put on a show, although Geraldton ranger Dan Carter was not able to overcome Van Styn’s nemesis, Te Moana Wijhon, with a stoppage defeat.

All proceeds for the night went to a good cause, supporting the ATLAS Foundation, a local not-for-profit providing access to sport and leisure for people with disabilities.
