US forces have struck two Iranian launchers on Iran’s Larak Island after Revolutionary Guard forces were reportedly seen preparing to fire rockets towards the Strait of Hormuz, according to a US official.
“Revolutionary Guard forces were observed preparing to launch rockets carrying sea mines toward the Strait of Hormuz,” Axios reporter Barak Ravid quoted the official as saying.
Iran’s Fars news agency separately reported an explosion had been heard near Larak Island, but said the cause was not immediately known.
The IRGC reported that several Iranian fighters and civilians were killed and wounded in the attack. They vowed to respond and punish those responsible, in a statement carried by Iran’s state broadcaster.
Last week, US President Donald Trump said all mines had been detonated or removed from the international waters of the Strait of Hormuz, and Iran had been told that any ship or boat placing new mines would be destroyed.
This escalation marks the first known strikes since late July, as the US-Iran war reached a stalemate in recent weeks.
