Man bitten by shark off Yarrabah, near Cairns in Far North Queensland

A 24-year-old man has been flown to hospital in northern Queensland after he was bitten by a shark on Sunday morning.

The man was attacked off the coast at Yarrabah, near Cairns at 10am, with a rescue helicopter tasked to the scene shortly after.

According to the Cairns Hospital and Health Service, the man was flown to the Cairns Hospital and is, as of Sunday afternoon, in a stable condition.

The extent of his injuries and the type of shark responsible for them are unknown.

The attack comes just weeks after a 34-year-old man was bitten further down the coast near Airlie Beach.

In late October, Todd Price man had been swimming at Hook Island when he was bitten on the leg – sustaining lacerations to his thigh and shin that required stitches.

It comes as the Queensland government is rolling out a $4 million pilot program for new technology aiming to mitigate the risk of shark attacks. Drone surveillance is set to be amped up while nets and drumlines remain in place.
