Ikea issues urgent recall for popular bookcases, cabinet after seven years
Retail giant Ikea has issued an urgent recall for a popular product sold over a seven-year period due to fears the item could cause serious injury.
The Hemnes bookcases and glass door cabinets are being recalled by the Swedish retailer after people were hurt by falling shelves.
The products were sold nationally between April 2010 and April 2017.
On Ikea’s customer service portal, the recall notice states that the Hemnes shelves could shrink and move in a dry indoor climate, resulting in them falling.
“The defect has occurred and caused injuries to consumers,” the recall notice states.
The solid timber bookcase and glass door cabinets were sold in various shapes and sizes.
Customers can check the product label at the top and bottom of the products. Date stamps ranging from 2010-04-01 to 2017-04-01 are affected.
The recall notice urges people to check their product and contact Ikea.
“Ikea will provide shelf support pins for affected consumers and instructions on how to install the pins,” the notice states.
Support numbers for affected customers:
- ACT/NSW – 02 8020 6641

- Victoria/Tasmania – 03 8523 2154
