A joint partnership between the Shire of Harvey and the Harvey Aboriginal Corporation has secured a $19,000 grant to pilot a hiking leadership program.

The program, which aims to teach the cultural significance of the Harvey area’s natural landmarks, will be developed over the next 12 months.

The program will also allow tour leaders to acquire a Certificate II in Leadership, and to take part in tourism, land and conservation courses.

Shire of Harvey president Paul Gillett said this was a fantastic opportunity to develop hiking tracks throughout the shire and create funding opportunities for local Aboriginal people.

“This program creates tourism and employment opportunities,” he said.

Members of the local indigenous community will be the ones leading the hikes through the Harvey region, and the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions will assist in the cultural tour development process.

Aboriginal elder Lesley Ugle said she was happy to have young Indigenous men and women involved in this exciting program.

It will ignite that flame in them that can shine bright,

she said.
