Dominant Albany trainer Steve Wolfe rounded out his 19th Great Southern Trainers’ Premiership with a treble at Percy Spencer Racecourse last Friday to take his final tally to 23 victories in the 2015-16 season.

Wolfe, who is holidaying in the United States, went into the final meeting almost assured of another trainers’ title given he sat four wins ahead of his nearest rival in Roy Rogers, but he capped off another successful season with three winners.

Promising three-year-old Boomshine started the day off perfectly for the Wolfe stable when he shot home from just off the speed to win the Due South Tavern Maiden by ¾ of a length at just his seventh career start.

Versatile veteran Ancient Spell, having his 90th career start, then triumphed in the Albany Hotel Handicap (2100m), grinding down I Done It in the final stages to win by a neck.

The Wolfe treble was rounded out by talented four-year-old War Ksar, who overcame a wide gate to shoot home and win the Six Degrees Albany Handicap (1600m) by half a length.

Stable representative Brett Wolfe was pleased to finish the season on a winning note and for his brother Steve to again claim another leading trainer award.

“It’s been another great season — we have had 23 winners and also won 10 in town,” Brett Wolfe said.

“The highlight has been Tayla (Stone) taking out the leading apprentice and Shelby (Colgate) coming through the ranks.

“It’s also really good to find a few nice young ones who could go on — horses like War June and One Short.

“Overall, it’s a team effort. All the staff here do a great job and also thanks to our loyal clients.”

Wolfe finished on 23 wins with Rogers (17 wins), Paul Hunter (14), Garry Delane (7) and Angela Smith (6.5) rounding out the top five.

Exciting young hoop Stone won her first Great Southern apprentice title with six wins to her name this season, edging out Sarah Bonner (4) and Fiona Bell (3).
