Despite six lead changes in the final term, nothing could separate Narrikup 1 and Kangas 1 in their top of the table clash on Saturday in round 10 of the Albany Netball Association A1 competition.

In the best game of the season to date, Narrikup stormed out of the blocks to open up a five-goal advantage at quarter time but gun Kangas recruit Maddi Western netted 11 second-term goals to give her side the lead at the major break.

At the other end of the court, Cherie Determes was in sensational touch for the reigning premiers, scoring eight goals in the third, locking the two sides at 27 apiece going into the final quarter.

In an electrifying final stanza, Kangas lead by as much as three goals but Narrikup centre Sharni Bracknell continued to feed Determes, who gobbled up her opportunities, and hauled her side back into the match.

Determes handed Narrikup the lead several times late in the match but Donna Robson (5 goals) and Rani Rawlinson (9) steadied the ship and at the final whistle the scores were locked 36-36.

Determes shot at 87 per cent, scoring 27 goals from 31 attempts while an exhausted Western sat out the final term after netting 22 goals from 27 attempts.

Acting Kangas coach Fiona Mountford praised her team for their efforts against the ladder leaders.

“It was a fantastic match, and a great standard,” she said. “The girls played such a good team game and we had an awesome second quarter.”

Mountford confirmed Western would play for the rest of the season in a major boost to Kangas’ premiership aspirations.

Acting Narrikup coach Mandi Bracknell said a draw was a fitting result in such an even game. while praising her defence for keeping them in the game.

Royals 1 moved into third position on the ladder following their 55-15 thumping of Bullets 1 while Magpies 1 held off a gallant Grammar 1 36-29 to push themselves into the four.
