Albany’s singles will be in for a treat this Halloween as four brave souls auction themselves off for charity. A Facebook group for singles over 30-years-old will host a spooky soiree on October 28 with members treated to a social evening at the Stirling Club. The highlight of the evening will be the auctioning off of two men and two women who will strut their stuff on stage to raise money for Pivot Support Services. Invitations have already gone out to the group’s 276 members but anyone who joins the group will be able to sign up for the event right up until the day. Membership is open to single people in the Albany region over 30 years old and the application process is simple — just join the Facebook group. Group administrators Gillian Sevier and Karl Rouse took over the group about six months ago and carefully vet prospective members, though Ms Sevier says the occasional younger person sneaks in. The 43-year-old, who doesn’t date herself, says the group started four years ago and has become an inclusive and positive social environment for people of “all walks of life, all abilities”. Though most people join purely for the social side, the “definitely not a hook-up page” does have a couple of success stories. “I know of one couple that have gone on to get married and another that are due to get married in a few weeks time,” Ms Sevier said. The pair, who assumed leadership of the group about six months ago, are hoping to pull off an exceptional evening that will raise $5000 in support of Pivot Support Services. “Pivot is such a great community hub that does an amazing amount of work here in Albany,” Ms Sevier said. “The support that they give to people with mental illness and the support they give to people that are homeless here in Albany. “The homeless community is growing everywhere and I feel that that is such an area that is really underfunded and can do with any support they can get just to help those that are less fortunate and might just need that bit of support.” Event-goers will also be encouraged to put their smooth moves to the test on the d-floor when Michael Jackson’s Thriller echoes from the speakers with a prize for the best-dressed Halloween costume. A host of prizes will be drawn from raffles, including a $250 cash prize and door prizes and an event photographer will float around capturing spooky pictures which will be available for purchase as part of the fundraising. A cost of $15 will gain entry into the auction evening with complimentary nibbles and cauldrons of treats. Meet the fabulous four who will bravely offer themselves for auction to win a date: Naomi Read, 37, Brian Shepherd, 38, Carlos Harvey, 44, and Kristy Rothwell, 34. Brian Shepherd The first person to be auctioned off for a date at our Halloween event is 38-year-old Brian. Mainly working in the disability sector as a support worker, Brian has a passion for life and is always looking for the next spontaneous adventure. He has two children which he absolutely adores and his passions include music and motorcycles. His ideal date would be dinner, with a wine or two, followed by a movie or a walk on the beach. Kristy Rothwell The second person on our auction list is no sugar and spice — more like the salami in the sandwich. Kristy is a 34-year-old female who works in the disability sector and has three children whom she absolutely adores. Kristy is a self-confessed loud, smart mouth, outgoing personality and a total social butterfly with a very quick wit and the dirtiest sense of humour. She enjoys going out, dancing, scuba diving and snorkelling and in her spare time she also lifts weights and is a bit of a gym junkie. Her ideal date would be a sunset picnic by the ocean, with a wine or two, of course. Carlos Harvey The lucky third to go up for auction during the Halloween event, but that doesn’t make him any less worthy. Don’t let that nervous face have you fooled, there’s something dark and mysterious about this fella. Carlos is a 44-year-old single full-time dad to two beautiful daughters who light up his world. He works in hardware and his passions include, building projects (ooh la la, he must be good with his hands), camping trips, playing pool and four-wheel-driving. Carlos says his ideal first date, would be anything spontaneous and unpredictable . . . let’s leave that up to your imagination. Oh my people, roll your tongues back in, look your best and bring your dollar bills — he’s sure to be hot, hot, hot. Naomi Read All class and sophistication, Naomi is a 37-year-old female who is a culinary genius by day and parent by night. She has two children and whilst they drive her slightly insane, she still loves them all the same. Naomi’s passions include keeping fit and healthy, she runs with her dogs, enjoys cooking, mountain hikes, horse riding and exploring new places. Her ideal first date would be a nice casual dinner with good conversation and company. Naomi has got a quirky sense of humour and enjoys life and while a farm girl at heart, she is certainly a lady.
