Great Southern quartet shine in Mid West
Local competitors Corben Weinert, Dean Castlehow, Sam Baxter and Ryder Smith have all recorded strong results at the opening round of the WAMX Junior and Senior State Championships in Geraldton at the weekend.
Weinert and Baxter competed in round 1 of the junior titles while Castlehow and Smith both took to the dirt in senior divisions.
Albany’s Weinert was in dominant form in the 85cc-150cc 12-16 years division, winning all three races on his way to a clean sweep and overall round victory.
The talented youngster also rode in the 100cc-125cc 13-15 years class where he finished third overall on 84 points behind Mat Fabry (105 points) and Regan Duffy (96).
Weinert crossed the line seventh in the first moto of that class and backed that up with two third placings to cap off a successful weekend.
Denmark’s Baxter 100ccompeted in the c-125cc 15 years category where he placed seventh overall and banked 70 points towards the State championship.
Baxter recorded a fifth, 10th and eighth in the three events.
The weekend also doubled as the opening round of the senior State titles with Castlehow tackling the veterans division and Smith competing in the MX1 class.
Albany’s Castlehow enjoyed a solid run over the weekend to claim third place overall with 86 points after two fourth place efforts and third in the final moto.
Smith, also from Albany, stepped up to the seniors for the first time and performed well after qualifying 17th in his division.
He finished in 25th place overall with his best race finish coming in the first two motos where the 16-year-old crossed the line 23rd of the 39 riders in the field.
The second round of the junior series will be held on June 12 while the next senior round will be contested on June 19.
