Cameron takes flight to Swans after stellar year
North Albany and Claremont product Darcy Cameron has been rewarded for a stellar 2016 season in the WAFL after being selected by the Sydney Swans as a mature-age recruit in tonight’s AFL national draft.
The Swans pounced on the 204cm Cameron in the third round, taking him with pick 48 in the draft which was their final selection of the night.
Cameron starred for Claremont at league level this season, playing as both a ruckman and forward where he finished up kicking 36 goals.
It ends three years of disappointment for the 21-year-old after being overlooked in each draft since playing State 18s for WA back in 2013.
Prior to tonight’s draft there was strong links suggesting Cameron could find a home in WA either at the Fremantle Dockers or West Coast Eagles while Geelong and the Swans had also shown plenty of interest.
Securing Cameron will provide the Swans with some much needed depth in both the ruck and down forward after the loss of big men Tom Derickx (retired) and Toby Nankervis (traded).
