BRAD DAVIDSONAlbany Advertiser

Back-to-back champions Albany Gold have stretched their lead at the top of the Lower Great Southern Bowling League men’s division one table to 81⁄2 points after they edged out the second-placed Middleton Beach Gold 72-67 on Saturday.

In a tight affair, Middleton Beach Gold took it right up to the reigning premiers, with Kim Jones’ charges recording a rink win, while the John Robertson-led four went within two shots of David Bojcun’s men.

But a convincing 27-15 rink victory from Barrie Starbuck’s team ensured Albany Gold remained undefeated this season.

Meanwhile, Middleton Beach Green continue to knock on the door of the top four following their 79-64 win over Albany Green.

Rink wins to Mal Greenhalgh and Greg Cooper’s charges saw Middleton Beach Green claim five points from the fixture.

A 33-16 rink win from Graeme Becker’s men ensured Walpole came out victorious in their clash with Denmark.

Walpole only managed 41⁄2 points, with the Brian Vigus-led four and Keith Manton’s charges locked on 26 points apiece.

Emu Point made it consecutive victories with a narrow 69-61 win over Cranbrook.

The winless Cranbrook put in a much-improved effort, with John Turner’s charges recording their second rink win of the season.

In the women’s first division, Albany Green made the most of Middleton Beach Green’s demise to move to within one point of top spot with a 3-1 win over Walpole.

Emu Point Red recorded a shock 4-0 win over ladder leaders Middleton Beach Green.

Middleton Beach White and Denmark recorded wins over Emu Point Blue and Albany Gold respectively.
