Boomerangs unbeaten on African tour
Local football duo Liam Bennell and Russell Wynne both played important parts in the Flying Boomerangs unbeaten tour of South Africa over the past two weeks.
Bennell, from Albany, and Wynne, from Mt Barker, helped the national indigenous under-15 side win both their games against the South African Lions in Johannesburg and Durban respectively.
The lively Wynne was named one of the Flying Boomerangs’ three best players in their 19.11 (125) to 2.2 (14) defeat of the Lions in their first match, with Bennell booting two goals in the 111-point victory.
Last Friday, the Flying Boomerangs completed the tour with another comprehensive defeat of the Lions, 17.15 (117) to 4.8 (38), the pair once again finding plenty of the ball around the ground.
Eight players represented WA in the 25-man squad, coached by former St Kilda player Raphael Clarke.
Their tour of South Africa included conducting a football clinic in Cape Town.
The team also visited Table Mountain, Robben Island, the Lion Park and a juvenile prison.
