UGSFL Round 13: Top two secure for Katanning, Narrogin make it consecutive wins and Wickepin bounce back

Katanning Wanderers secured second spot on the Upper Great Southern Football League ladder and a finals double chance after a 60-point win over Williams on Sunday. Twin forwards Josh Goodwin and Dionne Woods continued their fine seasons with five goals each as the Tigers ran out emphatic winners 14.12 (96) to 5.6 (36) and held the Cats to their lowest score of the season. Liam Hansen, Ryan Pontillo and Deklan Georgy were again outstanding in a defence that conceded just one goal in the second and third quarters. The Tigers kicked to the northern end of Quartermaine Oval that had a few water-logged areas but the Cats had an early goal through Izzac Barry. Goodwin kicked accurately on the run from 45m to give the home side their first and majors to Laurence Collard and then Woods had them seven points up at quarter-time. The Cats were held goalless in the second quarter as the Tigers took control. Goodwin kicked his second on a strong lead, Tyron Pinney snapped a freakish goal from 40m and then Woods kicked a trademark dummy and snap goal to give their side a handy 27-point lead at half-time. The home side lost Callum Collard to a knee injury in the first half and the Cats breathed life into the game early in the third term when Addison Dew scored. Goodwin replied immediately with another goal and he had four by the last change as the Tigers opened up a 41-point buffer. The visitors again kicked the first goal of the quarter through Jeremy Dickson but the home side booted the final five goals of the game to win easily. Woods’ five-goal haul leaves him four majors adrift of Brookton-Pingelly’s Lloyd Padwick in the battle to be this season’s leading goalkicker. The Tigers were best-served by Hansen, Pontillo, Georgy, Reece Nicholson, Josh McMahon, Goodwin and Woods. Riley Cunningham, Dew, Simon Panizza, Gerald Medlen and Barry all toiled hard for the Cats. Wickepin returned to the winners’ list, downing fellow top-four side Boddington by 23 points in Boddington. The home side led at quarter-time but four unanswered goals from the Warriors had them in front by the main break. Jaxon Ramsay booted five goals while State representative Callum Garcia was prolific as the Warriors held firm in the last half to record a 9.7 (61) to 5.8 (38) triumph. The Warriors were also well-served by star Jack O’Sullivan (two goals) and Joe Dowling. Jacob Schorer, Troy Egerton-Warburton, Damian Hayward were the Eagles’ best contributors and ex-AFL player Jarrod Cameron booted two majors. Narrogin made it consecutive wins as they dominated the opening half of their clash with Wagin at Matera Oval to go on to win 11.12 (78) to 7.6 (48). The Bulldogs could manage only one goal in the first half as the visitors set up the win with five of their own. After upsetting the Warriors last week the winners were well-served by Ryan Fleay, Michael Bradford, Jordan Heil and Blair Forrest this week, while Mumby finished with four majors. In the other round 13 fixture, Kukerin-Dumbleyung kicked two final-quarter goals to edge out Brookton-Pingelly by 12 points. Justin Joyce, Nathan Phillips and Eric Botha (four goals) were impressive for the Cougars, while Lloyd Padwick kicked six goals in a losing affair for the Panthers.
