Police appeal for community to submit CCTV locations to assist with investigations
Great Southern police are encouraging members of the public to register their private CCTV camera locations via a new application in a bid to prevent crime and create a safer community.
Cam-Map WA is a secure WA Police online database where businesses and individuals can voluntarily register the location of CCTV cameras.
Registering them will give local police accurate information on CCTV camera locations to help investigate crimes and track down offenders.
Cam-Map WA is for public-facing cameras only.
This includes CCTV cameras monitoring public spaces such as a footpath, street, carpark, shopfront, building foyer, park, or beach.
CCTV cameras facing private spaces such as rooms, gardens or views into neighbouring properties are not eligible for registration.
Katanning acting officer-in-charge Sgt Shelley McQueen, pictured, said it was a “fantastic initiative”, and urged residents to get involved.
“If members have this facility available, they are doing the whole of community a favour by being able to secure evidence for us that would be otherwise lost,” she said.
Sgt McQueen said community support with the Cam-Map WA scheme would help cut down investigation times.
Albany police officer-in-charge Sgt Brendon Blades said it could take days just to find out who had cameras after an incident.
“We can’t force people to do this, and if they register we don’t get direct access to their footage, but it’s a database of who can possibly help our policing,” he said.
