Over 30s netball tournament has Katanning buzzing with carnival atmosphere
Netball enthusiasts from across the South West made their way to the Great Southern on Sunday for the Katanning Netball Association’s marquee event.
The Katanning Leisure Centre was buzzing with activity as 16 teams descended on the facility to mark the start of this year’s Over 30s Netball Carnival.
The sounds of laughter and music alongside the colourful costumes distinguished the carnival from a typical weekend’s fixtures at the leisure centre.
The round robin carnival involved 42 games across three grades on four courts, producing seven hours of high intensity netball.
Despite some close contests between the sides, the matches were played in great spirits.
There were prizes to be won from the local businesses that sponsored the event.
It was the first time the Over 30s carnival had been played since 2019, with last year’s tournament cancelled because of COVID-19 restrictions.
At the end of the rounds, the B-grade contest came down to a clash between the Great Southern sides the Renegades from Katanning and The Dumbleyung Old Ducks, with Dumbleyung running out the winners 23-13.
The A-grade final was a thriller between two other Great Southern sides: Ongerup and the Nets Top Models from Albany.
It was a tough, hard-fought contest but Albany emerged victorious by three points, 17-14.
