It took a clinical Lower Great Southern side to fight off a spirited Great Southern outfit to secure the 2024 Elders Southern Bowling Zone Inter League Round Robin tournament at the weekend. Ninety-six avid bowlers from across the State’s south gathered at Williams Bowling Club battling 40C heat to vie for a spot in the Inter Zone tournament in February. Both sides entered the final match of the round-robin style tournament without dropping a game, but a well-polished LGS team emerged victorious 79-70. Lower Great Southern secured 10 points on their way to a flag, finishing 100 shots up at the end of their five games. They finished two points clear of Great Southern who finished runners-up with a 50-shot advantage, while Central Stirling rounded out the top three with six points. South East Coastal’s two wins came against Central Stirling and Upper Great Southern, who defeated South Central Arunga. SCA were the only team to go through all five games without registering a win. LGS had five players picked to play in the Inter Zone tournament in Manning in February: Matt Mitchell, Kelvin Crosby, Jon Davidson, Doug Wright and Kevin McGregor. Warren Holt, Richard Schinzig, Nick Hosking, Mark Schinzig and Charlie Russell were all selected from GS to play while Bevan Fancote, David Cliff and Dave Harris were picked from UGS. The Inter Zone Round Robin is scheduled for February 3 and 4 and will attract some of the best bowlers from across the State.
