Kukerin man ordered to cough up nearly $10,000 after leaving trail of destruction in Bremer Bay

A Kukerin man will have to cough-up nearly $10,000 for mowing down 14 streets signs on a trip to Bremer Bay. In the early hours of June 8, Brett William Trealor, 30, used his Toyota LandCruiser to deliberately knock over speed, T-junction and information signs throughout the Bremer Bay area, the Albany Magistrate’s Court was told last Thursday. Trealor was arrested by police later that day at the Bremer Bay caravan park. After reading out the facts of Trealor’s two criminal damage and dangerous driving charges, police prosecutor Sgt Alan Dean seemed perplexed about the 30-year-old’s actions. “It’s simply dumb to drive your own car into road signs for fun or boredom,” Sgt Dean said. Trealor pleaded guilty on all charges. Magistrate Raelene Johnston told Trealor his crimes had the potential to put other road users’ safety at risk. “It’s astounding you decided to go out and commit this reckless damage and put yourself at risk,” she said. “(It’s) difficult to fathom.” Ms Johnston handed Trealor $1700 in fines, while also ordering him to pay the Shire of Jerramungup $6340 and Main Roads WA $1541 for the damage. Trealor, through his defence lawyer, admitted to the court he “acted like an idiot”. According to the lawyer, Trealor had sent apology letters to the Shire of Jerramungup and Main Roads for damaging the property. He had decided to take the trip down to Bremer Bay to “let off steam”. In July, Sgtt Simon Bickers from Jerramungup police said the charges were laid on Trealor as a result of information from Bremer Bay locals and CCTV vision. “It’s created quite a stir in Bremer Bay,” Sgt Bickers said in July. “The locals down there are not happy, to the point that people he was staying with were asked not to come back to Bremer Bay.”
