Hockeyroos secure 2024 Olympic Games qualification after Oceania Cup victory over New Zealand

The Hockeyroos booked their place at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris after a thrilling 3-2 win against New Zealand to claim the Oceania Cup in Whangarei on Sunday. After winning the opening game of the three-match series on Thursday, the Hockeyroos drew with the Black Sticks on Saturday to leave the home side with a chance heading into Sunday’s final clash. The winner of the Oceania Cup gained automatic qualification to Paris and the Australian women’s team produced an inspired display in the third game as they came from a goal down to secure Olympic qualification. Tambellup’s Penny Squibb, who cruelly missed the 2020 Olympic Games with injury, was part of the successful Hockeyroos team. Tarryn Davey scored first for New Zealand before two goals in three minutes form Brooke Peris and then Grace Stewart handed the visitors the advantage. Courtney Schonell then made it 3-1 in the 32nd minute and despite a late goal from Hope Ralph it was the Hockeyroos who prevailed to win the series 2-0. A 51st minute equaliser from Rosie Malone helped the Hockeyroos escape with a 1-1 draw on Saturday, cancelling out the effort of Hannah Cotter in the 37th minute. Last Thursday, teenager Claire Colwill’s third international goal on the stroke of half-time, followed by two goals in the space of a minute from Rosie Malone and Peris ensured the Hockeyroos took a crucial early advantage in the cup. Squibb played a key role in the Hockeyroos defensive unit, as they conceded only three goals across the series.
