Great Southern produced an impressive performance on their home greens to win the Southern Country Zone Inter League Men’s Round Robin Fours competition in Katanning at the weekend. Six teams and about 100 players from the Southern Country Zone met at the Katanning Country Club to compete in the Elders Inter league Round Robin, hosted by the Katanning Bowling Club on January 6-8. The hosts were far too strong, however, as Great Southern claimed their first title at the event since 2018. Made up of players from Darkan, Dumbleyung, Katanning, Kojonup, Moodiarrup and Wagin, Great Southern produced impressive results across the five games of 21 ends. Great Southern finished with 10 points, 12 rink wins and 66 shots up to easily defeat Central Stirling (five points, 13 rink wins and 27 shots up. Last year’s winners Lower Great Southern still sent a strong side despite the absence of State player Matt Mitchell but they could only manage third with five points, 11.5 rink wins and 68 shots up. South Central Arunga (four points, seven rink wins, -48 shots up) were fourth ahead of South East Coastal (four points, seven rink wins, -112 shots up) and Upper Great Southern (two points, 9.5 rink wins, -8 shots up). After the official opening on Friday morning, the bowling commenced at 9.30am and teams played two games each. Play continued on Saturday, before the decider on Sunday. Six teams of four players were selected after the event and will go on to represent the Southern Country Zone in the Inter Zone Round Robin Fours later this year in Denison.
