Drought-breaking Ladies Inter League Round Robin Fours title for Lower Great Southern

Lower Great Southern have claimed a breakthrough title at the Southern Country Zone Inter League Ladies Round Robin Fours competition held in Katanning last week. The annual carnival was held from Friday to Sunday at the Katanning Country Club, with 96 players from leagues across WA taking part. Their overall triumph was the first time LGS had won the title since the 2012-13 season. Lower Great Southern edged out rivals and event hosts Great Southern in a terrific finish to the three-day contest. After the five rounds Lower Great Southern finished with 12.5 rink wins, 49 shots up and eight points, edging out Great Southern who were on 11 rink wins, 69 shots up and eight points. Upper Great Southern claimed third place with 11 rink wins, 45 shots up and six points and South Central Arunga were fourth with 14 rink wins, 21 shots up and four points. South East Coastal (six rink wins, 80 shots down, two points) and Central Stirling (5.5 rink wins, 104 shots down and two points) were fifth and sixth respectively. Katanning ladies vice-captain Bernadette Bradley said the competition went down to the wire. “Two Katanning ladies were in the Great Southern team that finished second and did very well,” she said. “It really was down to the last bowl and after three days it’s quite incredible it can come to that. “We’ve got new greens, this is only our second season here and we’ve moved to a different venue altogether. This is the first time we’ve had such a high-skilled event on the new greens and they are playing beautifully.” From the tournament, a Southern Bowling Zone team of 16 players and two reserves was chosen to compete at the Inter Zone Round Robin Fours comp at Denison Bowling Club on March 12 and 13. Winning side LGS, made up from members of clubs Emu Point, Middleton Beach, Albany, Mt Barker Golf, Mt Barker and Denmark had three players named in the Southern team, Beryl Cooper, Karen Miller and Marjorie Silvester with Anne Hunter a reserve. Great Southern players selected in the representative team were Kerrie O’Halloran, Sharon Whana, Jill Warburton, Jacinta Zadow, Karen Ward, Kylie Schinzig and Shellie Bilney with Leanne Cook a reserve.
