WA Police to investigate ‘credible’ new information relating to Gerard Ross murder and a man who killed his wife and dumped her body

Police are investigating “credible” new information after a surprise witness came forward with startling claims relating to a convicted killer who dumped his wife’s body just metres from the grave of murdered schoolboy Gerard Ross. A man has told detectives the killer admitted in 2015 that he had “buried something else” in the Karnup pine plantation. The murderer allegedly told him he knew the area very well, saying: “If you ever want to get rid of anything, dump it in that pine plantation.” The new witness does not know what the killer might have buried, saying his memory of the conversations was “sparked” only by recent reports in The West Australian and on Today Tonight. “I didn’t know what he was referring to,” he said. “I didn’t think too much about it until this story came up.” The killer, now aged 74, served 16 years in prison for murdering his Thai former wife Chalauy, whose body was discovered in June 1998 by police hunting the killer of Gerard. The 11-year-old’s body had been dumped in the same part of the Karnup pine forest eight months earlier. The new witness, who says he built up a rapport with the person-in-question, has provided the information to detectives investigating the schoolboy’s unsolved murder. Special Crime division boss Det-Supt Rod Wilde this week said his cold case homicide squad would “work through” the new information to determine its relevance. “We’re in possession of the information and we’ll be investigating,” he said. “I’m sure the information is credible but its relevance is something we’ll investigate. “We still have to work through the information but it’s useful and we’re grateful that people have come forward after the publicity and provided information that we can follow up.” The convicted killer has come under renewed scrutiny since The West revealed the former jockey and taxi driver may have abused a boy in the mid-1970s. The new witness claims the convicted killer made admissions about assaulting young boys. He allegedly said: “If you give them enough money they’ll do anything to you.” “I warned him to keep quiet about that,” the witness said. “I told him people don’t like paedophiles.” The killer is also under Department of Communities investigation for allegedly “prowling” around the backyards of neighbours at the state housing unit block he lives in. Residents have told The West they have seen him lurking in bushes late at night, in parts of the unit complex he has no reason to be in. On one occasion, he was allegedly caught peering through the kitchen window of a single mother’s unit. Police have received more than 100 pieces of information since The West released its new investigative documentary The Boy in the Blue Cap: The Gerard Ross Story about the Newman schoolboy’s baffling abduction and murder. In the exclusive eight-part series, police vowed to reinvestigate all 1300 people who have been linked to Gerard’s death since he vanished during a family holiday at Rockingham, south of Perth, on October 14, 1997. Horse trainer Mick Miller found his body in the Karnup pine plantation, 20km away, two weeks later. Det-Supt Wilde has repeatedly refused to comment on whether the killer who dumped his ex-wife’s body near Gerard’s grave is a suspect in Gerard’s case, but said his officers “keep an open mind” to all new pieces of information. “Certainly, we will investigate all that information, but I won’t comment on what action we will take or investigations we will undertake,” he said. “Anyone who has information which they believe may be relevant to Gerard’s murder, we ask that they come forward. “A number of people have but we’re sure there may be other people in the community with information that may be relevant, so we urge them to make contact with us.” Det-Supt Wilde said his team was attempting to contact all callers to Crime Stoppers within 24 hours. When approached by The West last month, the killer denied any involvement in Gerard’s abduction or murder, or abusing a boy in the 1970s. He has since disconnected his mobile number and this week refused to return messages or answer his door.
